Consider these words by inspirational speaker and author, Tommy Tenney, “Don’t let your past hold your future hostage.” It’s not a stretch to imagine that if a “do over” line existed for all those who felt ~ feel stuck or trapped by their past, the line would undoubtedly loop around the world. Truth be told, “do-overs” are not necessary. What is necessary ~ even empowering ~ is to embrace and examine the whole of you, not just bit parts: their sum total will define who you are now and reveal who you are becoming…who you will be. It is important to understand why you do what you do and want what you want. “Don’t let your past hold your future hostage.” Instead, take what you learn from the past: let it be instrumental in enhancing your ability to make decisions which will not only produce results today, but also impact tomorrow.

Take the limits off God! “By His mighty power at work within you, He is able to accomplish infinitely more than you could ever dare to ask or hope.” (Ephesians 3:20). Develop that Survivor in you: Go after what you’re asking God for! Every day, Re-affirm that “You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you.” (Philippians 4:13). Trust in God: No matter who or what circumstances might try to uproot you from your stance of grace, hope, faith, love, and peace. Stay grounded in God’s love: No matter what life hurls your way. Have faith: God sees all, hears all, and will do whatever He has to for all who seek Him. Be convicted: God is in control…ALL things happen in His own perfect time. And “…when your heart is overwhelmed, He will lead you to a rock higher than you” to keep you safe. (Psalm 61:2). Be motivated by the Survivor in you to ACT: Inspiration without passion fails to incite neither commitment or expression!

Know your power and strength! When you’re not in touch with your own empowerment and strength ~ when you don’t know that both come from within, you squander and give away overmuch, unknowingly. And when your life turns upside down, self-recrimination, depression, and anxiety snuggle around you like one big warm~cozy blanket. At this point it simply feels natural to embrace a pseudo perception of being weak and powerless ~ even lost ~ and sometimes even broke, busted, and disgusted. Your mind screams with questions that would have been wise to ask on the front end rather than the back end, such as Who am I? What am I doing with my life? How could I have been so stupid? And of course that all important question, What am I gonna do now? You are free, as you have always been, to search for answers and solutions ~ to seek wisdom and knowledge ~ to pray for understanding, and to apply what is best for your life. You might start by considering the wisdom of Proverbs 22:3, which states that “A prudent person foresees the danger ahead and takes precautions; the simpleton goes blindly on and suffers the consequences.” However, the good news is that as long as God grants you breath, it’s never too late to turn things around. You were created for success. Plan for it! Develop it! Own it! Walk in it! Be Prudent about it! Guard it and Keep it!

In the preface of Rainer Maria Rilke’s Letters To A Young Poet, publisher Mark Allen introduced these words from Franz Kappus, a young poet and recipient of Rilke’s letters: “When a truly great and unique spirit speaks, the lesser ones must be silent.” Of course, Kappus was referring to Rilke, whose timeless words of wisdom still resonate poetically and powerfully to impact lives today. However, make no mistake, God is the greatest Spirit to ever speak! One of life’s eternal~incorruptible blessings is the knowledge that God’s Words [profoundly wise, poetic, and empowering] are written in the heart and mind. They are THE Supreme Resource for everything. They are available any time, day and night because God’s Spirit lives within. Seek His wisdom first…before any other…above any other. Be silent and listen… “His Word is pure.” (Psalm 119:140).

Life is about choices! “What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” (Ralph Waldo Emerson). What lies behind you is that pile up of choices you’ve already made, whatever their outcome. What lies before you is possibility and opportunity in every given moment, right here and now. What lies within you is free will: you can choose to tap into that God given eternal source of empowerment generated from the Word ~ and the assurance that, “You can [overcome and] do all things through Christ who strengthens you.” (Philippians 4:13). Take time to consider and understand the impact of your choices BEFORE you act ~ even, BEFORE you speak! Absolutely every choice you make represents a piece of the puzzle that will ultimately disclose a portrait of who you are ~ and where you’ve been. Given that we live experientially, don’t spend too much time in the Woulda~Shoulda~Coulda Departments of your mind. What lies behind, before, and within, collectively contribute to influence your decision making process. Everything has it’s season: learn to identify the signposts alerting you to when one is over…and move on…stronger~wiser~better!

Given that life is experiential: a collective pile up of choices and actions that create your reality–past and present–you might be carrying around a load that should have been discarded long ago. If so, just know that it’s easier to move through (not around) the problems born in the situations you create and enter into the solutions, which can be found in your quiet time of reflection and renewal. You are not one of life’s victims! Know where you stand! Are you living life as though each day and each person matters? Are you determined to plant seeds today that will preserve and advance the quality of life tomorrow for yourself and others, whether you’re in it or not? Or, (to borrow a term from Fernando Savater’s book, Amador) Are you an “ambitious accumulator,” bent on manipulating both people and money to acquire the good life for yourself? While it may appear harmless to want what you want when you want it, it’s important to know where you draw the line to make it happen: Not knowing is like stumbling in the dark ~ like running the risk of harming both yourself and others. Dream the big dreams, but take care to remember that “The word of God is a lamp unto your feet and a light unto your path.” (Psalm 119:105). Know where you stand, and calculate the cost of not consulting the Author and Finisher of your Faith!
